Open Training - Optimist

Designed for sailors who want to build their racing skills and confidence, These weekends offer high-quality coaching focused on improving technique, tactics, and performance on the water. The Weekend is open to sailors from all clubs. - Take part in the full two-day programme, or drop in for a single day of top-quality coaching. If sailor needs to use one of our Clubs Optimists for a weekend, this can be arranged - please contact the club in advance. There will be a charge of £10 per day.

Description

Led by experienced race coaches, the weekend provides a fantastic opportunity to sharpen your boat handling, develop race strategies, and gain valuable experience through a mix of practical sessions, race simulations, and individual feedback. Whether you’re preparing for your next event or simply looking to become a more confident racer, this training will help you take your sailing to the next level.

 If sailor needs to use one of our Club Optimists for a weekend, this can be arranged.  There will be a charge of £10 per day.

Prerequisites

Sailors should:

  • Have completed their RYA Start Racing module (or equivalent experience) and be comfortable around a course independently
  • Have been sailing regularly at a club for at least one season
  • Be able to launch and recover their boat (with some support)
  • Be ready to focus on racing with the concentration and effort that it involves.

 

What you need to bring

To ensure a safe and productive weekend, sailors should come prepared with:

  • Packed Lunch, snacks and water
  • Dressed for the weather - winter sailing kit is recommended in colder weather
  • Warm weather: Sun glasses, Sun Hat, Sunscreen

 

 

Course Content

On-The-Water Coaching

  • Advances boat handling -sail trim, balance and speed control

  • Build confidence with starting practice

  • Refine Upwind and downwind tactics

  • Perfect mark roundings and positioning

  • Put learning into action with race simulations and short-course challenges

Shore-Based Sessions:

  • The racing rules of sailing - turning knowledge into an advantage

  • Strategy and decision-making using wind and tide

  • Fitness and preparation for racing

  • Boat Setup and tuning for performance

  • Debriefs and video feedback (where Possible)

 

Similar courses

This course will give you a fun introduction to the basics of sailing a small dinghy and gives you the opportunity to push yourself if you wish.

More Information

The Improver Camp builds on learning in the beginners camp, with the sailors aiming for their RYA stage 3 and State Racing of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme. These camps are an excellent opportunity to get out on the water and get a lot of sailing in.
